The lost paradise of Omar Sharif

Omar Sharif was filming "The Mysterious Island" in Lanzarote. He visited the unfinished house and loved it so much he bought it on the spot... and then lost it 24...

Lagomar House, located in Lanzarote, Spain, has a unique history of its own. The house was designed by Jesús Soto. Soto was an architect who worked closely with renowned local artist César Manrique in the 1970s. It was originally built as a private residence for the island's British businessman, Sam Benady.

The house is carved into Lanzarote's characteristic volcanic rock formations, giving it a unique and striking appearance. The design includes a series of interconnected caves and terraces, with each space offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

In the early 1980s, the property was purchased by actor Omar Sharif, who reportedly fell in love with the house while filming a movie on the island. However, it didn't last long, as he soon lost the house to Sam Benady at cards. Although an experienced bridge player himself, Omar Sharif was unaware that the British developer was the reigning European Bridge Champion. The property passed through several different owners over the years.

Today, Casa Lagomar is open to the public as a museum and cultural center, showcasing César Manrique's unique architecture and design. The property includes a restaurant, bar, and several event spaces, as well as a pool and gardens. The house has also appeared in several films and television programs, further enhancing its cultural significance.
